Nersisyan Street, Yerevan. Speeches will be delivered by: Academician Ashot Saghyan, President of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, Vahan Kocharyan, Director of IAPP NAS RA, Professor Sultan Dabagov, Deputy Scientific Director of the National Laboratory of Frascati (INFN), Italy, Dmitry Roshchupkin, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Director of the Institute of Technology of Microelectronics and High Purity Materials of RAS, Alexey Gogolev, Vice-Rector of Tomsk Polytechnic University, Russia. Following the speeches, a ceremony will be held to honor and award the distinguished researchers of the institute. As part of the jubilee events, the 4th International Scientific School named after Academician Alpik Mkrtchyan titled “Radiation Physics and Related Applications” kicked off on June 16. The school brings together renowned scientists, young researchers, and students from the UK, Italy, Armenia, Malaysia, Switzerland, Russia, and Saudi Arabia. The school’s sessions will continue until June 21. Founded by Academician Alpik Mkrtchyan and his students, the Institute of Applied Problems of Physics of NAS RA today is a well-established scientific institution with strong traditions and a developed scientific school. It includes 9 scientific laboratories and employs about 200 staff members, including 3 corresponding members of NAS RA, 18 Doctors of Science, and 47 PhD holders. The Institute was established in 1980 as a department within the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR, with the status of an institute. In 1984, by the decree of the then-president of the Academy, Viktor Hambardzumyan, it was officially renamed the Institute of Applied Problems of Physics. Initially, the research activities were focused on gamma-resonance (Mössbauer) spectroscopy, modulation spectroscopy of X-ray and optical beams, crystal growth, acoustics, and high-tech scientific instrumentation. Over the years, the institute expanded rapidly, both in scope and infrastructure. By the late 1980s and early 1990s, a new building was constructed, and new laboratories were opened. Today, the institute carries out both fundamental and applied research in the fields of: Condensed matter physics, Acoustics and acoustophysics, Low-temperature plasma physics, Materials science, Nano- and mesoscale systems, Physical medicine, Alternative energy, Science-intensive instrumentation. The established scientific school and research potential are being preserved and enhanced through the involvement of young specialists. The institute also hosts a specialized academic council (053) for the defense of doctoral and candidate dissertations in the fields of “Condensed Matter Physics” and “Semiconductor Physics”.
